The best line in this entire film, which you neglected to mention at all and therefore fail, is “the warden is best at kung fu.” This line encapsulates the shonen fighting hierarchy in one shot. You simply don’t GET to be the warden unless you are, indeed, the best at kung fu.
Speaking as one of the premiere Riki-Oh experts on the planet, this movie is INCREDIBLY faithful to the manga, more so than the anime even. The manga in question was written by Tetsuya Saruwatari, the visionary great who brought us Dog Soldier and Tough/Shootfighter Tekken following his being trained by KAZUO KOIKE~!
The difference is that the film only covers about the first 3 volumes or so of the manga, which is a 12 volume epic. Also, they omit the bit where Riki’s fist bears the Star of David and his opponents have Nazi swastikas on theirs.
The first three volumes are the least ridiculous. Don’t make me repost that thread I made from two or three years ago chronicling Riki’s fight against Nazi Jack Nicholson.

Riki-Oh truly is the greatest movie EVER! When I began watching it, I had somewhat of an idea of what I was getting myself into. Even with this knowledge I still wasn’t truly ready for the glory that it brought to my living room.
