Review in a Nutshell: A science fiction / buddy cop comedy by a first time director, Real Men (1987) suffers from truly baffling narrative, directorial, and editing decisions that make the film the cinematic equivalent of being kicked by a horse. It’s a weird one.

Sounds like someone was channeling “The In-laws” when this was being written. This is a rare one, I have NEVER seen it, and don’t remember it being on cable (maybe HBO exclusive). The Grandpa with a sex change bit seems to be tipping his cap towards Ed Wood of all people (Ed was just a cross-dresser himself, but he wore a bra and garters wading ashore on Tarawa, and of course “Glen or Glenda”). Mid 80s Jim Belushi always came across to me as that mid-card wrestler that management REALLY wants to “get over”. He was in a LOT of bad movies and often badly miscast. He had too much talent to be a “nepo brother”, but he was pushed HARD in a lot of bad movies and roles. Run time is only 85 minutes, so it could have been cut to ribbons or undershot.
