Review in a Nutshell: Crossing supernatural horror with a film noir sensibility, Lord of Illusions (1995) has strong production design and good performances from a bevy of character actors, but it suffers from sluggish pacing and an inconsistent tone. It’s an interestingly messy film.

I thought the film was alright, but also that Nix was badly cast for a character that’s supposed to be scary/intimidating.

You guys brought up Stephen King with the worthwhile note that one shouldn’t extrapolate too much from the author’s life to their work. I think it’s worth noting how much better a director Barker is of his own work compared to King’s Maximum Overdrive (which I admittedly haven’t seen). Admittedly, King was out of his mind on cocaine, but I think lots of directors have done better jobs under similar conditions.
