Review in a Nutshell:  A film that includes baby dinosaur shenanigans, tropical hijinks, and rampaging arthropods, Son of Godzilla is one of the goofier entries in the Showa series.  Many fans revile it for the introduction of the titular character, but the film is still something of a guilty pleasure here at the Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast.

This movie contains:

The true peril of giant arachnid research.

  1. I consider myself acquainted with many of the world’s most serious Godzilla fans and scholars, and I think among such people, the films of the 60s and 70s are regarded much more highly than they are among more casual fans, specifically I think because we’re of all about the same age — that age that means we watched these movies on TV as kids.

But even more than that, once you accept that these are a different type of movie than the original, they are all fun fantasy adventure and sci fi films. I mean, the dapper monkeys of MechaGodzilla, the swingin’ same-sex family of Megalon, the corn-eating hippie and karate go-go girl of Gigan…to say nothing of Nick Adam, Akira Takarada, and Kumi Muzuno swankin’ their way through Monster Zero. These are entertaining movies!

Sure, not the grim speculation of the original, but attempts to retread the original always come across as crass and insincere. It was a film that could only happen in the time and place it did. Any attempt to recreate it in sequels would have rung false.

All that said, the movie that really needs its reputation rehabilitated is Godzilla 1984. The original Japanese version, sans the Dr. Pepper placement in NORAD, is really a decent movie.

  2. Make sure your mom realizes that Fist of the North Star was a children’s show.

  3. So according to you that last bit about the two of them simnply hibernating seems added in. Is the line present in the Japanese as well or just in the dub version? I sense you think this is thgis movie’s version of saying Duke is in a coma.

  4. Awesome! I love this movie.

  5. Please, feel free to do more Godzilla podcasts.
    Just more Kaiju in general.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on the Heisei Gamera Trilogy.
