There’s a Fungus Among Us

Batten down the hatches and stow the sails, because Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Click on the Japanese movie poster or the title above to download our review of the film, featuring M.O.M. and many mushrooms.

Review in a Nutshell: Although M.O.M. disagrees, I feel that Matango is a cinematic rarity in that it is both bleak, nihilistic, and psychedelic. The special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya and company as well as the set dressing are especially good. Who is the real monstrous mushroom? Who, indeed?

For the first time in a long time I have actually seen this movie! It is really weird, and I honestly can’t say I really liked it. But it stands out in my mind for being really weird.

This is one of those movies I keep hearing about, Paul, and have never seen – whenever I go looking to rent or buy it, I can’t find it anywhere!

The review you and M.O.M. gave of this movie reminded me a lot of Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1978 in tone if not in style. Also wasn’t Matango the name of the city of Mushroom people in Secret of Mana?
