September has come and gone, but let’s all pretend this was published on time. It’s the sixth episode of GME! Anime Fun Time, in which Clarissa and Gerald of Anime World Order join me to talk about Princess Jellyfish. Topics of discussion include embarrassing real-life otaku experiences, in-group vs. out-group behavior, the way perception and self-image shape social interactions, and whether there is an intrinsically gendered component to the concept of character growth. FINAL THOUGHT:
We sort of forgot to mention that Kuranosuke’s uncle (that’s him on the left) is the Prime Minister of Japan.
I didn’t get around to watching this until earlier this year. I found it to be quite entertaining, and I think it deserves a lot of credit for, well, unconventional main characters. I haven’t listened to the episode yet, but I think it will be interesting to hear you all talk about the gender aspects of the series.
Oy! I am not sure WHAT you’re getting us into, Paul….
As a fan of the anime (haven’t read the manga but totally would if it were brought over here to the US) I’m actually really excited about the live-action movie. I think Suda Masaki, whom they cast as Kuranosuke, is a pretty good actor so I have high hopes for it.
On the topic of good live-action versions of manga/anime — Paul, have you seen Aoi Hono/”Blue Blazes”?? It’s a bit like a live-action Otaku no Video. Worth watching if ye haven’t seen it, IMO!
sorry, actually Clarissa brings up Aoi Hono at the very end of the episode! oops
