Review in a Nutshell: Savaged by critics as derivative and derogatory when first released, My Bloody Valentine (1981) is a gem among the slasher subgenre for its attention to detail, strong production design, sympathetic characters and gruesome gore effects.

This may be a cut above Ebert’s “dead teenager movies”, but that’s a very low bar. It’s been many years since I watched this, so my recollection is imperfect, but to me it was just one of many inferior imitations following in the wake of Halloween (the atypical good movie in the slasher subgenre).
