Review in a Nutshell: A low-budget killer critter flick trying to cash in on the popularity of Jaws and The Birds, Kingdom of the Spiders features a surprisingly sharp escalation of tension, a surprisingly bleak conclusion, and an absolutely ridiculous number of adorable, cuddly tarantulas.
I think I remember this one, Paul – though I’m not sure if it’s this or THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION that has the VW Beetle dressed in fur with fake legs as a “giant spider”!
You’re thinking of The Giant Spider Invasion, Tim. This one has thousands of normal-sized tarantulas.
Okay, Paul – I get the two mixed up, obviously.
Didn’t know someone went out of their way to put out any special features for this movie at all on DVD. Best I had in my mom’s collection was a lousy VHS tape released by some Canadian outfit that looked as if it was recorded from a TV broadcast. That’s how much anyone cared for this one in those days when I saw it once in a while on USA Network (and yes, they use to play this one a lot).
