It’s time once again for some anime fun, and on this occasion Tom and I are talking about the 2001 OAV series Read or Die, which is based on a series of light novels and a manga by Hideyuki Kurata. Read or Die is a stylish, action-packed romp in which the super-powered forces of the British Library face off against evil clones of various semi-obscure historical figures bent on world domination. It’s a little bit James Bond, a little bit X-men, and just a teeny-tiny bit steampunk. (No, not the bad steampunk. The good steampunk.) Tom and I are joined by guest host Casey from Anitwitter to talk about the 2014 TV anime, Ping Pong: The Animation, adapted from the manga by Taiyō Matsumoto. Ping Pong: The Animation is visually dense and rich with characterization. It’s a very uplifting, life-affirming series, although you wouldn’t judge that from some of the advertising. It’s that time again, time to have some Anime Fun. This time Clarissa from Anime World Order joins us again to discuss the strange, supernatural, and visually unique 2007 TV anime, Mononoke. An original series based on the character of the Medicine Vendor from the earlier Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke features bright colors but dark subject matter, and it turns limited animation into an artistic statement rather than a budgetary consideration. Monitor your processor run times, because Appleseed: Alpha is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Review in a Nutshell: Appleseed: Alpha has excellent visual design and some good character moments, but a weak antagonist, a derivative plot, and far too little action. Still, it has cyborgs driving things, so A+ / 5 Stars / Would Buy from Again.

Hold onto your (robot) butts, because Starchaser: The Legend of Orin is (probably not) the Greatest Movie EVER!

Review in a Nutshell: Starchaser is an oddity. A 3D film with rotoscoped animation, Starchaser is also a blatant Star Wars knockoff filled with weird religious symbolism and uncomfortable subtext. Watch it at your peril.
