Review in a Nutshell: Awash in nostalgia and soaked in the anxiety of the threat of Cold War era nuclear annihilation, Matinee (1993) is a film oddity and a loving tribute to the oeuvre of master movie marketer William Castle.
I love this thing, flawed though it is. It’s very good execution of a fantastic idea, doesn’t quite reach full potential but what’s there is worth looking for. I especially like when our socially aware parents are stepping out of the theater with utterly confused looks and asking each other “why did we think seeing that was a good thing?” Reminded me of my parents when I was young and me in my movie-devouring college days. Eventually you learn how to support things without having to throw yourself on every grenade..
I clicked on my feed super quick when I read Manatee then I heard them say Matinee. Those high expectations were impossible to be met but still enjoyable podcast.
Also, we need a horror movie about a killer manatee now
