Review in a Nutshell: A film filled with baffling narrative and editorial decisions, Pacific Rim: Uprising is a prime example of what happens when artistic choices give way to financial and marketing ones.

Review in a Nutshell: Combine a dubious choice of subject matter, cultural appropriation / whitewashing / racebending, an overblown budget, an unnecessary 3D post-conversion treatment, numerous delays, studio interference, a novice director, deceptive marketing, and an indifferent film-going audience and you get a recipe for disaster. As a movie, 47 Ronin is bland with a few entertaining moments, but as an exercise in how not to make a movie, it is fascinating.

Review in a Nutshell: If you have any affection in your heart for super robot anime or giant rubber monsters, you owe it to yourself to check out Pacific Rim. It has some of the best special effects and production design you’re likely to see for some time, and it manages to be uplifting and hopeful rather than gritty and grimdark.
