Review in a Nutshell: The Changeling (1980) is a beautifully shot, gorgeously edited, low-key, suspenseful film that is part ghost story and part detective story. Although the final act stumbles a bit after all of the mysteries are revealed, it’s still interesting as a well-made, atypical horror movie.

ERRATA: I accidentally referred to House on Haunted Hill as 13 Ghosts. Mea culpa.

It’s that time again, time to have some Anime Fun. This time Clarissa from Anime World Order joins us again to discuss the strange, supernatural, and visually unique 2007 TV anime, Mononoke. An original series based on the character of the Medicine Vendor from the earlier Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke features bright colors but dark subject matter, and it turns limited animation into an artistic statement rather than a budgetary consideration. Review in a Nutshell: A film filled with hard-partying U.S. Marines and improbably ninja, American Ninja 2: The Confrontation is a largely derivative sequel that still manages to capture a lot of the zaniness that made the mini “ninja craze” of the Eighties such a unique period in film history. The presence of Steve James really elevates the film.

FINAL THOUGHT:

Kidnapping people at the beach is standard ninja operating procedure.

Review in a Nutshell: Although M.O.M. disagrees, I feel that Matango is a cinematic rarity in that it is both bleak, nihilistic, and psychedelic. The special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya and company as well as the set dressing are especially good. Who is the real monstrous mushroom? Who, indeed?

Review in a Nutshell: This is an odd one. It’s a carefree children’s adventure movie filmed by a pioneer of violent, trashy Oz-ploitation flicks. BMX Bandits takes a while to deliver the bicycle-related goods and some of the stunts may seem tame by today’s standards, but overall this is a harmless kid’s movie filled with snarky, wise-cracking Australians.

Review in a Nutshell: A comedic send-up of spy movies featuring Richard Grieco as a high-school French student turned involuntary secret agent, ‘If Looks Could Kill’ is both surprisingly gruesome and surprisingly humorous. Review in a Nutshell: Push (2009) is a high concept action / science fiction film with surprisingly well realized characters and some genuinely entertaining moments. With a little tighter editing, it could have been a fun little cinematic gem, but as it stands its more a diamond in the rough.

Review in a Nutshell: Dr. Giggles is a strange film. Ostensibly a horror movie, Larry Drake plays the titular slasher-villain like a live-action cartoon, while the rest of the cast is mostly dramatically serious in their roles. The contrast is jarring, and although I appreciate terrible puns as much as the next person, the movie never quite strikes the proper balance between horror and humor.

FINAL THOUGHT:

Yes, this scene is accompanied by at least one “give me a hand” pun. It’s mandatory.
