GME! Anime Fun Time Episode #02: Kill la Kill

It’s time for episode two of Anime Fun Time, and boy do we have a show for you today: a massive, spoiler-laden, two-part examination of Kill la Kill, Studio Trigger’s first full length TV animation offering. Join Paul, Tom, and Jill as they perform a deep dive on a show that’s much, much more than just fan service and explosions. CLICK HERE for Part 1, and HERE for Part 2.

Topics of discussion include:

  • Part 1 – general plot discussion; puns & homophones; formalistic elements such as pacing and structure; the nature of fan-service;  a pro-feminist interpretation of the series; and listener questions.
  • Part 2 – corrections and clarifications; the influence of shojo manga, fairy tales, and the erotic-grotesque-nonsense movement; the Sada Abe incident; manga and anime as counter-culture; more on feminism; our favorite moments; and additional listener questions.

Final Thought:

“Sometimes you just gotta be washed by a naked rainbow lady.” – Tom Pandich

Final Thought:

“Hi, guuuuuuuuuy.”

It’s my Pain, It’s my Loneliness.

Hold onto your entrails, because Fist of the North Star (1986) is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Click on the DVD cover or the title above to download our review of the film,

featuring Daryl Surat of AnimeWorldOrder and M.O.M., the Mistress of Malapropisms.

Review in a Nutshell: A compilation film encapsulating a huge chunk of a television series that ran for over 150 episodes, Fist of the North Star is a movie that doesn’t bother to apologize or explain. It’s an acquired taste, and at best an unlikely starting point for budding anime fans.

We completely forgot to mention:

This ship.

The Mud Golem scene.

Jeff Tatarek’s Horse.

Bad Highlander, starring the Worst Highlander

Break out the katanas and the rocking guitar solos, because Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is (probably not) the Greatest Movie EVER!

Click on the movie poster or the title above to download our review of the film, featuing Sean “Hollywood” Hunting.

Review in a Nutshell:  Beautifully animated but structurally crippled, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is still not the worst Highlander property, even if Colin MacCleod is hands-down the worst Highlander.  Paul blames the script; Sean blames the director.  A fabulous time is had by all.

This movie contains:

Chainsaw-wielding Cannibal Mutants.

Druid Ghosts.

Nice Mullet, Jerk.

Sweet Lovin’, Eighties Style.

The best thing to result from this anime.

“Math is Hard.”

In the future Mars is a lot like Epcot, and Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door

is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Review in a Nutshell:  The Cowboy Bebop movie is basically an episode of the TV series extended out to feature film length.  Whether that’s its greatest strength or its greatest weakness is a matter of opinion.

Be sure to check out DAPD-DX’s review here and Dave and Joel’s take here.

This movie contains:

The Patented Ed-in-an-Amphora(TM).

Faye Valentine, Being Useless and Getting Kidnapped. (Again.)

Psychotic Villains.

“A man who was living in a dream…”

Happy Cyborg Mother’s Day!

The Greatest Movie EVER!

Don’t have a Descartian existential crisis,

because Ghost in the Shell is the Greatest Movie EVER!

This movie contains:

I can see my house from here.

Naked Bungee Jumping.

Basset Hounds.

I <3 Batou

Batou, probably my favorite character in cinema. (Besides Tank Girl.)

This just looks so wrong.

Kusanagi MOE-toko. OMGLOLZ.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you M.O.M.s out there,

and congratulations to FuzzyPrint

for winning the Make M.O.M. watch Ghost in the Shell Contest!
