Review in a Nutshell: A confluence of punk rock anarchy and self-deprecating suburban cynicism, Repo Man is also a high concept, low budget science fiction film with a bizarre sense of humor and an avante-garde edge. It’s the kind of film that could only have come from the early Eighties.

Review in a Nutshell: If you have any affection in your heart for super robot anime or giant rubber monsters, you owe it to yourself to check out Pacific Rim. It has some of the best special effects and production design you’re likely to see for some time, and it manages to be uplifting and hopeful rather than gritty and grimdark.

Review in a Nutshell: Based off of a long-running series of ‘men’s adventure’ novels, Remo Williams tries to emulate the James Bond films and to find a happy middle ground between action-movie seriousness and tongue-in-cheek camp. It does not ultimately succeed, but the film inspires some interesting conversation.

Review in a Nutshell: Essentially a re-telling of King Kong without the troubling racial subtext, The Valley of Gwangi pits real cowboys against stop-motion animation dinosaurs. The visual effects by Ray Harryhausen are outstanding.
Sharpen your butcher knives, because Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Review in a Nutshell: A misguided attempt to bring the plot of the films in line with the narrative of the video games, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D tries for grotesque horror and fails spectacularly with hilarious results. Few films have made me laugh this hard while attempting to scare or unsettle me.
Don’t ask about the three seashells, because Demolition Man is the Greatest Movie EVER!

Review in a Nutshell: A stylish film that highlights the awkward transition from the pure absurdity of 80s American action films to the more self-aware output of the 90s, the humor in Demolition Man holds up much better than the fight choreography these days.

Review in a Nutshell: A raucous, satirical celebration of martial arts films, Kung Fu Hustle is populated by an eccentric cast of unlikely heroes and villains. Stephen Chow’s film is at once funny, sentimental, and thrilling, with an excellent mix of wirework, CG, and physical skill in the fight scenes.

Review in a Nutshell: Brash, crude, and confrontational, Predator 2 is nonetheless a film worth revisiting over and over again. While the plot and pacing aren’t as tight as the original film, the movie is carried by the eccentric performances of its cast and the wonderful special effects by Stan Winston and company.
